Texas Governor Rick Perry spoke for about 17 minutes this afternoon in Waukee, Iowa. He was speaking at The Family Leadership Summit, a day-long event organized by The Family Leader, an Iowa-based organization that played a key role in the 2010 judicial retention election in which three Iowa Supreme Court Justices who signed onto the court’s same-sex marriage ruling were voted off the bench.
Perry joked about his time as GOP frontrunner, weaving his self-deprecating humor into his remarks about his Christian faith.
“One of my heroes in the Bible is Peter,” Perry said. “…Sometimes Peter’s mouth worked faster than his brain did. Trust me, I can relate to that,” Perry said, and the crowd laughed. “I tell folks that my mouth may probably be the biggest reason I was the shortest-lived front-runner in the history of a presidential campaign. Y’all remember that….It was one of the most exhilarating three hours of my life.”
The crowd laughed, along with Perry.
AUDIO of Perry’s speech.
Perry quoted comments Paul Ryan made this morning as Ryan was introduced as Mitt Romney’s running mate.
FYI: the reference at the start of his remarks about blinking is about the showdown over Texas state government funding of Planned Parenthood. (Perry’s trying to bar it.)
