As Texas Governor Rick Perry arrived at The Des Moines Register’s Soapbox on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, he asked the newspaper’s political editor, Carol Hunter, a question.
“Can I just go up there and get after it?” Perry asked. The “there” would be a small stage, decorated with hay bales, that serves as the “Soapbox” for the Fair.
Hunter was set to open the festivities with a few brief words, then turn the introduction over to Perry’s wife.. “Oh, you’re going to introduce me,” Perry said, when advised of the speaking order.
Texas First Lady Anita Perry, when she took the stage, immediately seemed to be venturing into dangerous territory, but turned just before the cliff. “Good morning, Iowa. O.K., I got asked the question, ‘So Anita, are you going to go back and say that the Texas Fair is better than the Iowa Fair?’ and I say, ‘Well goodness gracious, give me a chance at least to experience,” she began. “I will have to say Iowa knows how to put on a Fair, so thank you so much.”
