The final day

See blog post above for a major technical correction, although today is the final day of debate on this bill.

The Iowa House convened at about a quarter after eight this morning and Republicans quickly took actions which mean debate on the labor bill (debate that started Wednesday afternoon) will conclude this morning and a vote will be taken by noon.

It’s a risky gambit, if Republicans intend to pass the amendment they brought up for debate last night in the 10 o’clock hour.  That’s because Democrats could stay in their closed-door meeting until right before noon, emerge, and force the House Republicans to set that amendment aside and vote on the entire bill.

The first actual vote taken this morning was on the motion to set noon as the cut-off for debate and the time by which a vote has to be taken on this bill.  The motion passed on a 52-35 vote.  Then Democrats went to Caucus (which means they went into a private meeting to discuss strategy).
