By the numbers: 1944 people

Capitol police estimate the crowd at last night’s union rally inside the statehouse and the public hearing that followed in the Iowa House at 1,944.

There are two magnetometer screening locations in the entry floor of the Iowa Capitol which all visitors must pass through.  The south entry “mag” recorded about 2200 people and the west entry recorded about 1600 all day yesterday. The security guards at those stations kept track of the number of visitors before 4 p.m., and those after 4 p.m. as one of the factors in coming up with that 1,944 estimate.
