Branstad declines invitation to Culver’s speech

Yesterday, Culver’s staff issued a statement about today’s speech and the expected absence of Governor-elect Terry Branstad.  This is what the late Monday afternoon statement said:

Note to media: The Governor and Governor-elect do not wish to provide undue distraction from the duties assigned to each as part of an orderly transition. Therefore, Governor-elect Branstad will not be in attendance at the Governor’s Condition of the State address Tuesday, and Governor Culver will not participate in inaugural activities on Friday.

Now, this Tuesday morning, Culver’s staff issued a “clarification” which you may read below:

Press Advisory: Clarification on This Week’s Schedule

DES MOINES –  Governor-elect Terry Branstad was invited to Governor Culver’s Condition of the State address. The  invitation was declined by  Branstad because he didn’t think it was appropriate to be in attendance. We are disappointed. As a courtesy to Branstad to have his own day without distractions, Governor Culver will not be attending inaugural activities.
