Graslsey and Senator Mary Landrieu, a Democrat from Louisiana, are co-chairs of the Senate Caucus on Foster Youth.
The 2008 bill promotes the adoption of children from foster care, especially older kids and those with special needs. The bill also makes it easier for grandparents, aunts and uncles to adopt a child who’s been placed in foster care. In addition, the legislation dealt with foster care problems for Native American children as — for the first time — it allowed foster care funds to be paid directly to tribal governments. Advocates say it means more Native American kids can remain in their own tribal communities.
