Party, “no party” voter registration numbers in Iowa

The state’s commissioner of elections (the secretary of state) has released voter registration data this morning. 

SECRETARY OF STATE MAURO RELEASES NUMBER OF PARTY REGISTRATION CHANGES OVER PAST 12 MONTHS

DES MOINES – Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro today released updated voter registration numbers including the number of voters who changed party affiliations in the 12 months leading up to Tuesday’s Primary Election. 

Overall Voter Registration Numbers
As of June 1, 2010, total voter registration numbers in Iowa are as follows (the numbers below include active and inactive registrants):

•         No Party:  772,725
•         Democrats:  710,017
•         Republicans:  607,567

Changes in Party Affiliation
The number of registered voters who changed party affiliations within a year of the 2010 Primary Election is as follows:

•         No Party to Democrat – 7,112
•         Republican to Democrat – 1,897
•         Democrat to No Party – 9,222
•         Republican to No Party – 7,156
•         No Party to Republican – 8,292
•         Democrat to Republican – 4,896

Note:  The totals represent registered voters who changed party affiliation since June 8, 2009.

New Registrations
The number of new registrations over the past 12 months is as follows:

•         No Party:  37,931
•         Democrat:  18,254
•         Republican:  17,759

In order to participate in Iowa’s Primary Election on June 8, eligible voters will need to register either as a Democrat or as a Republican.
