Iowa Caucus ’08 replay? Romney endorses Branstad2010

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has endorsed former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad’s bid for a fifth term.  First, the news release:

ROMNEY ENDORSES TERRY BRANSTAD FOR IOWA GOVERNOR

Today, Mitt Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC endorsed Terry Branstad for Iowa Governor (www.governorbranstad2010.com).

“Terry Branstad served Iowa well in the 1980s and 1990s, compiling an enviable record as a pro-growth fiscal conservative who will make jobs his first priority. Iowa is ready for a comeback, and Terry’s proven leadership is just what Iowa needs to get its economy back on track. I am proud to endorse his candidacy to lead Iowa to a more prosperous future,” said Romney.

Romney’s PAC also has sent Branstad’s campaign a $10,000 primary election contribution.

Free and Strong America PAC:

Mitt Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC (www.FreeStrongAmerica.com) supports officeholders and candidates who are dedicated to advancing social, fiscal and foreign policies that will strengthen America at this critical time in the nation’s history. The guiding focus is on the core principles that have built and nurtured America since its founding – uncompromised military strength, a belief in the power of free markets and that a competitive America is one where taxes are low and government is small, an emphasis on strong families and a federalist approach to government that leaves decision-making as close to the people as possible.

As you may recall, Romney was backed in the 2008 Iowa Caucuses by key players on the Branstad2010 team, including former Branstad chief of staff/2002 GOP nominee for governor/Des Moines lawyer Doug Gross.  Tim Albrecht, Romney’s Iowa-based press secretary for the Caucuses, is Brasntad’s press secretary for this year’s campaign.  Romney, in general, was the perceived “party establishment” candidate in 2008.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee won the 2008 Iowa Caucuses.  He has endorsed Bob Vander Plaats, one of Branstad’s rivals for the GOP nomination for governor.  This is Vander Plaats’ third campaign for governor.  In 2007, he endorsed Huckabee’s presidential bid and campaigned extensively throughout the state with Huckabee before the 2008 Iowa Caucuses.

So the 2008 Iowa Caucus campaign may be replayed in the June 8 GOP primary for governor….
