Filing deadline, 5 p.m.

Here’s the updated list from the Iowa Secretary of State’s office.  The list is of candidates who filed the necessary number of petition signatures to place their names on the Republican and Democratic Party primary ballots for the party primaries that will be held on June 8, 2010.  The procrastinator’s award goes to Tom Fiegen, a former state senator who had said he was running for the Democratic Party’s 2010 U.S. Senate nomination.  Fiegen submitted his nominating petitions at 4:30 p.m. and as I type this at 5:41 p.m. they’re checking them out to see if he met all the filing requirements.

Legislative news: in the House, 48 Democrats currently serving plan to seek reelection and 38 Republicans who’re currently serving will run in 2010.  On the Senate side, 25 of the 50 senators are up for election in 2010.  One of the 18 Republicans in the senate is retiring; two of the 32 Democrats are retiring.  The rest of the incumbents are seeking reelection.
