The governor has set the date for the special election in the Cedar Rapids area to replace State Representative Dick Taylor, a Democrat who resigned yesterday. The district is not considered a competitive one, but is seen as solid Democratic. Rep. Taylor won reelection in 2008 with 70 percent of the vote. Read Culver’s release below.
GOVERNOR CULVER SETS SPECIAL ELECTION IN HOUSE DISTRICT 33 FOR NOVEMBER 24
DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver has signed a proclamation setting Tuesday, November 24, 2009, as the date for the special election in House District 33. The election is to replace State Representative Dick Taylor, who announced yesterday that he is stepping down from the Iowa House.
“Lieutenant Governor Judge and I want to express our gratitude to Representative Taylor for his service to his community and our state, and wish him and his family well in the future,” said Governor Culver.
Under the Iowa Constitution, when a vacancy occurs in the Legislature while the Legislature is not in session, the Governor must set the election within five days of when the vacancy is announced and give at least 40 days’ notice. House District 33 is located in Linn County and includes portions of Cedar Rapids.
