An aide to Senator Tom Harkin announced this morning that Senator-elect Al Franken of Minnesota will be the headliner at the annual Tom Harkin Steak Fry fundraiser this September. Franken will be formally assuming the role of senator soon (he'll be sworn in next week), so don't expect him to perform bits from his Saturday Night Live days.
As you likely know if you follow Iowa politics, Barack Obama was the Steak Fry's headliner in 2006. Former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore have been frequent fliers at "The Fry." In presidential election cycles, the Steak Fry has served as a forum for all the candidates to speak, as was the case in the 2007 edition of the Harkin Steak Fry when organizers say about 12,000 people attended.
