Earlier this year House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (D-Des Moines) said during an appearance on Iowa Press that he did not have a desire to run for congress. Iowa's third district congressional seat is currently held by 75-year-old Leonard Boswell, a Democrat from Des Moines. State Senator Jack Hatch, a Democrat from Des Moines, is often placed on lists of those who would like to run for Boswell's seat. But during taping of this week's edition of Iowa Press, Hatch took him name off that list.
Henderson: "Do you ever intend to run for congress?"
Hatch: "No." (a slight pause) "I'm very…
Henderson: "Why not?"
Hatch: "…satisfied, well, the most important thing is I'm a businessman and I have a business to run and right now it's doing well, but the economy is not and you never know what's going to happen, so I have a responsibility to my business."
UPDATE: Hatch has been tapped by the White House to lead a "working group" on health care reform.
