While Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has frequently commented on the issue over the past decade, Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-Mt Vernon) was the first and so far only member of Iowa's congressional delegation to issue a statement this morning regarding President Obama 's executive order on stem cell research. (UPDATE: Harkin issued a statement, which you can read in the post above.)
CONGRESSMAN LOEBSACK STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA LIFTING BAN ON FEDERAL FUNDING FOR STEM CELL RESEARCH
Congressman Dave Loebsack issued the following statement on President Obama Lifting the Ban On Federal Funding for Stem Cell Research:
“I am pleased that President Obama is going issue an executive order today that reverses President Bush’s directive on embryonic stem cell research. By lifting the ban on federally funded stem cell research, President Obama brings hope to the many people whose quality of life could be vastly improved through research and innovation.
“Since I have been a member of congress, I have signed onto The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 873) each year. There are more than 100 million individuals whose lives could be improved with the promise of stem cell research. Last Congress, this legislation passed in the House with overwhelming bipartisan support but was vetoed by President Bush.
“H.R. 873 also institutes strong ethical requirements for carrying out research on embryonic stem cell lines that are eligible for federally funded research. With strict ethical provisions, this legislation will enable our scientists and researchers to improve the lives of many who are battling life altering and threatening diseases.”
