In today's column, The Des Moines Register's David Yepsen quoted from a book about Abraham Lincoln's firstsuccessful presidential campaign. The book — The Great Comeback: How Abraham Lincoln Beat the Odds To Win the 1860 Republican Presidential Nomination – is written by Gary Ecelbarger. Ecelbarger is the husband of one of my college roommates, Carolyn. Carolyn and I were dorm friends who lived on a floor called "Vollmer." We shared an apartment one summer where I learned to appreciate the whole wheat spaghetti Carolyn ate to fuel her long-distance runs. The apartment was also the site of our first exposure to MTV.
