U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has run for the United States Senate five times. In 1984 he defeated Republican incumbent Roger Jepsen. In 1990, Harkin defeated then-Congressman Tom Tauke. In 1996, Harkin defeated then-Congressman Jim Lightfoot and in 2002, Harkin defeated then-Congressman Greg Ganske.
In 2008 Harkin's opponent was not a congressman. It was Christopher Reed, a small businessman from Marion who refused to concede last night. "The voting's over but it's not done yet," Reed said late Tuesday. Reed spoke with Radio Iowa by phone about an hour and a half after every news organization in the country had called the race for Harkin. "When all the votes are counted, then we'll see where we stand then we'll let people know how we feel then," Reed said.
It's now 8:37 a.m. on Wednesday and still no concession from Reed. Harkin is still waiting for a concession from Lightfoot who, on Election Night back in 1996, refused to concede.
