Former Iowan notes hotel distance from convention center

Arizona Senator Jon Kyl, an Iowa native, was among a group of folks who talked this morning to Iowa delegates at the RNC.

"Is there anybody here from Davis County?  Davis County?  Bloomfield?" Kyl began.  No one in the delegation responded.  "Well, that’s where I graduated from high school.  Wapello County?  Ottumwa?"

"Yeah," one person replied.

"Close enough," Kyl replied.

"You were the governor of Boy’s State," a gentleman in the crowd said.

"I was indeed," Kyl replied.  "In 1958, I believe it was.  I’m starting to date myself here."

The crowd laughed.  "Well, I still have a sister here in Des Moines and always enjoy getting back to Iowa.  By the way, I thought I was getting back to Iowa after the travel from St. Paul this morning.  You all drew the short straw getting the hotel."

Iowans are staying in a La Quinta in Bloomington — about 15 miles from the convention floor at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

  1. Couldn’t have anything to do with McCain repeatedly skipping the caucuses and his subsequent poor showings here? The Iowa Dems got to be front and center. You’d think a toss-up state like Iowa would be treated a little nicer.
