Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson gave a speech at the Des Moines Register "Soapbox" at the Iowa State Fair moments ago. Listen to it here..
You’ll hear him drawl through certain words, like Nashville, and hear him recite his resume. Of his subbing for radio host Paul Harvey, he told the Fair crowd: "That’s kind of like pinch hittin’ for Babe Ruth."
"I think the American people are going to give us a shot," Thompson said of his as-yet-to-be-formally-announced presidential candidacy.
One of his best lines with the crowd: "Our main laws come from God and not from any kind of government."
Thompson concluded with this: "If things play out the way I’ve got it in mind, we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other…Keep your powder dry. I think we can do something good for America. Thank you very much."
I have watched all the candidates thus far and people seem to think former Sen. Fred Thompson is “late” announcing his candidacey so near the caucauses. Wrong; Mr. Thompson has sat quietly back and listened to other candidates flap their lips and expounded on issues they think are relevent in this election. Now, Mr Thompson has had the chance to study these other candidates and seems to know what the people really need and want. Now is his time to to show us his platform. Something that the people are ready to listen to. I was a former regional Secretary for the Democratic Party in Iowa. Have I changed parties, NO, but I will be changing my mind on my Presidential pick. I like Fred Thompson, I am willing to listen and hopefully learn more about this man. I have a right as an American citizen and a Mother of a son who has served 14 years in the military, to vote my mind. If it is republican then so be it. I want the best man for this country, and so far Sen. Fred Thompson is that person. If anyone wants to dissuade me, give me a reason to vote for someone else. We need a leader not a bully and not a sissy following Daddy’s pant leg. Thank you Mr. Thompson!
