Thompson takes more steps

Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson has hired an Iowa team for his yet-to-be-formally-announced bid for the Republican Party’s 2008 presidential nomination.  What follows is a news release from the Thompson camp — note former House Speaker Ron Corbett, who is also the former head of the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, is on the Thompson team.

THOMPSON ANNOUNCES KEY COMMITTEE STAFF, ADVISORS IN IOWA

(DAVENPORT, Iowa) Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy G. Thompson announced today that
four more prominent Iowa Republicans, including the state chairman of the Iowa College
Republicans and the former Iowa Speaker of the House, have signed on to his presidential
exploratory committee.

"We are building a strong team in Iowa that is committed to bringing America together again
and developing common sense solutions to the problems that face our families," Thompson said. "I
am highly honored that they are joining the exploratory committee."

The additions to Thompson’s Iowa team include:
• Chad Olsen, Forbes 2000 political director and Sukup for Governor campaign manager in
2002. Olsen will manage the exploratory committee and will serve as Iowa campaign
manager, should Thompson decide to run for President in 2008.
• Ron Corbett, Speaker of the Iowa House from 1994-99. Corbett will serve as senior
advisor to the exploratory committee.

• Bobby Kaufmann, State Chairman of the Iowa College Republicans. Kaufmann will
serve as Thompson’s events coordinator.
• Gwen Ecklund, Member and former President of Iowa Federation of Republican Women
Board of Directors and Republican National Committee Women’s Steering Committee
member. Ecklund will serve as an advisor to the exploratory committee.

The four join two key team members who signed on last month:
• Steve Grubbs, Bob Dole’s state co-chairman in 1996, Chairman of the Iowa GOP 1997-
98, and state representative 1990-96. Grubbs will serve as a consultant to the exploratory
committee.
• Brian Dumas, Sen. Charles Grassley’s state organization director in 1998, Alexander for
President in 1996 and 1999, director of state legislative campaigns. Dumas will serve as a
consultant to the exploratory committee.

"Tommy Thompson has a proven record of getting things done, both at the federal level and
especially as Governor of Wisconsin," Olsen said. "He is a leader who is not afraid to tackle the
tough issues facing the country, and that is what America needs."
