Maya Angelou spoke this evening at Drake University. She recited two poems, one of which was “The Health Food Diner.” It is a celebration of meat — steak, roast, breaded veal, etc.
At the conclusion of her speech, Drake University president David Maxwell came on stage to formally thank Angelou and said of the meaty poem: “I am going to call Governor Culver and recommend that it be adapted as our state song.” The crowd applauded and laughed.
